The camera was a Canon 30D.&nbsp; The camera was set to a 30 second exposure at F16 which is the correct exposure when the strobes fire.&nbsp; When a bat trips the infrared light beam the strobes are fired.&nbsp; If the IR beam is not tripped, the camera advances to the next frame in 30 seconds.&nbsp; The result is several hundred black frames and a few pictures of bats each night. <br> <br> The images below are the best of the shots taken during the week. These bats squeezed out of a 1/2 inch crack every night about 35 minutes after sunset.&nbsp; There were an estimated dozen bats, with only six or so adults that were in flight.&nbsp; Due to the low number of bats in this location I could only expect a few shots every night.&nbsp; To really perfect the technique and get some better pictures I needed a location with a lot of bats. <br> <br> <center> <b>Little Brown Bat (Myotis lucifugus) photographed in the thousand island area of New York State</b> <br> <br> <table> <tbody> <tr> <td align="center" valign="bottom"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, Sans-Serif" size="-2"><a href="bat_5916.jpg" target="ImageWindow"><img src="bat_5916_t.jpg" alt="bat_5916.jpg" border="0" height="150" width="150"> <div style="text-align: center;">bat_5916.jpg<br> </div> </a></font></td> <td align="center" valign="bottom"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, Sans-Serif" size="-2"><a href="bat_5922.jpg" target="ImageWindow"><img src="bat_5922_t.jpg" alt="bat_5922.jpg" border="0" height="150" width="150"> <div style="text-align: center;">bat_5922.jpg<br> </div> </a></font></td> <td align="center" valign="bottom"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, Sans-Serif" size="-2"><a href="bat_6136.jpg" target="ImageWindow"><img src="bat_6136_t.jpg" alt="bat_6136.jpg" border="0" height="150" width="150"> <div style="text-align: center;">bat_6136.jpg<br> </div> </a></font></td> </tr> </tbody> </table> <table> <tbody> <tr> <td align="center" valign="bottom"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, Sans-Serif" size="-2"><a href="bat_6172.jpg" target="ImageWindow"><img src="bat_6172_t.jpg" alt="bat_6172.jpg" border="0" height="150" width="150"> <div style="text-align: center;">bat_6172.jpg<br> </div> </a></font></td> <td align="center" valign="bottom"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, Sans-Serif" size="-2"><a href="Bat-taking-a-rest-.jpg" target="ImageWindow" ><img src="Bat-taking-a-rest-_t.jpg" alt="Bat-taking-a-rest-.jpg" border="0" height="150" width="150"> <div style="text-align: center;">Bat-taking-a-rest-.jpg<br> </div> </a></font></td> </tr> </tbody> </table> <br> <br> </center> To obtain a location with a lot of bats I placed an advertisement in the local news paper.&nbsp; After the copy editor was done laughing she gave me the advertisement for free!&nbsp; Only three people answered my ad, but they all spoke about the same barn that was only a 30 min drive from my home.&nbsp; The owners of the barn obtained the property only a few years ago, they kindly gave me permission to photograph their bats.<br> <br> Looking inside the barn with a strong flash light I found a population of bats at least 5,000 strong.&nbsp; The bat <a href="guano.jpg">guano</a> was three to four inches&nbsp; bats inside the barn and gets about twice this deep before it is cleaned out each fall.&nbsp; On the side of the barn was a <a href="bathouse.jpg">bat house</a> that had even more bats!<br> <br> <div style="text-align: center;"><img alt="bat taking a rest" src="Bat-taking-a-rest-.jpg" style="width: 540px; height: 333px;"><br> <br> <img alt="sharp bat teeth" src="Bat-teeth.jpg" style="width: 521px; height: 377px;"><br> <br> </div> The Barn location allows the flashes to be properly spaced, the big issue is with the bats.&nbsp; Since the barn has a huge number of holes the bats leave through numerous locations.&nbsp; To keep the bats to some sort of flight path the <a href="barn-doors.jpg">barn door</a> was kept open for a week.&nbsp; At the end of the week many bats decided to use the open door as as an easy entrance.&nbsp; This door is where the photo equipment was set up.&nbsp; The equipment was powered by a 12 volt car battery run through an <a href="Inverter.jpg">inverter</a>. <br> <br> <center> <a href="bat-flashsetupfull.jpg"><img alt="bat equipment setup" src="bat-flashsetupsmall.jpg" style="border: 0px solid ; width: 360px; height: 198px;"></a> <br> <br> Click on the image for a diagram telling what it all is. </center> <br> <br> The bats fly with their mouths open because their ultrasonic noise maker is in their throats.&nbsp; Needless to say photographing bats does take a lot of equipment, but mainly it takes time.&nbsp; The bats rarely fly where you would like them too, and having a lot of bats to work with improves the odds of getting a good shot. <br> <br> <center> <table style="text-align: left;
